Mad Detective- June 8th

Mad Detective (2007)
Cantonese- Crime Drama
Not Rated
Runtime- 89 min.
dir. Johnnie To and Wai Ka-Fai

I really don’t know what to say about this movie, other than that it was pretty darn good.

Story/Writing: 1.5/2

A newbie cop brings a retired schizophrenic onto complete an abandoned case.  The detective can supposedly see people’s “inner personalities”, allowing him to solve cases that would otherwise remain mysterious.  As the case thickens, the line between reality and the detective’s altered state begin to blur.  Gets a little turned around at times, so pay close attention to the characters’ names and actions.

Acting: 1.5/2

The acting of the “alternate personas” is very interesting in regard to the “real” action of the other actors.

Photography/Set: 2/2

A very interesting editing style that really plays up the central effects that are present throughout.  The sets are really great too, especially for the last scene.

Sound/FX: 1.5/2

Pretty cool, like I mentioned earlier.  Good soundtrack and visuals.

Misc: 1/2

It has a lot going for it, but ultimately is brought down a little by its own size.  It ended somewhat awkwardly as well.

VERDICT: 7.5/10

See it if you like thrillers or movies that have a unique premises.
