Rango (2011) English- Family Comedy Rated “PG” Runtime- 107 min. dir. Gore Verbinski
It’s strange and sometimes disappointing to see intellectual property owners disputing the title of “best” among the consumer audience. Pixar has long held the title of champion in the world of 3D animation that doesn’t suck, with Dreamworks contending for second place. Then out of left field came Nickelodeon and the Pirates trilogy director and next thing you know, there’s a new player in town.
Predictable as far as the family-friendliness of the plot goes, but there was plenty of fun bits of flair and fluff.
Johnny Depp is every bit as good as everyone expects him to be, and the rest of the cast does little to disappoit.
A cool new style that encourages a lot of detail, and there was time taken to add the southwestern flair. I know that the movie takes place in a “Wild West” desert, but the bloom coming out of the screen at times was unbearable.
Again, a really neat animation style. The soundtrack, although fitting of the film, was a little bland, except for the owls. The water effects were really good, too.
A good film that really set out to try a couple of new things technically, if not creatively.
A must-see for any fans of the Depp, or computer animation nerds.
