Visioneers (2008) English- Dark Comedy Not Rated Runtime- 94 min. dir. Jared Drake
Watched this for two reasons: Zach Galifianakis and the cover. It is defined by most accounts to be a “dystopian comedy”. I suppose this would be a flavor of dark comedy, but with a more philosophical view.
A comically depressive view of a future society controlled by a single corporation. Just to give you a taste, the accepted form of greeting or farewell in this weird culture is a raised middle finger.
Galifianakis is great in the lead, filling the screen with his wry expressions. The ensemble is off and on as they take their turns.
The office scenes are really great, as are a lot of the fictional television shows that appear in the film.
Not a bad soundtrack, but it really shines in the effects. Everyone in this alternate world is terrified of “exploding”. When it actually happens on-screen, the outward emotional effect is just as good as the special effect itself.
It has a lot going for it, but it lacks that last punch to to really bring to all together as a cohesive piece.
Good, not great, but good. Definitely worth a watch if you’re a fan of Galifianakis as a comedian.
