The King and Four Queens- May 5th

The King and Four Queens (1956)
English- Romance/Western
Not Rated
dir. Raoul Walsh

So here comes a romantic-styled Clark Gable Western and…

I can’t think very well right now because I’m currently watching 21 Grams, and it’s sucking away at my soul with its unending stream of depression.  I’ll write more about it at a later date, but for now it’s bruising my creative ability.  Let’s just get to what I’m writing about now.

Story/Writing: 1.5/2

A fairly standard piece of paperback romance novel fiction in its main plot, but the writing for each scene tends to be a lot smarter.

Acting: 1.5/2

Although Gable is the definitive highlight of the cast, the ensemble isn’t bad.  Eleanor Parker is nice in her supporting role as well.

Photography/Set: 1.5/2

Normal Western backdrop, and good attention to period detail.  Sometimes it feels a little closed in when it should feel more wide open in the outdoor shots.

Sound/FX: 1.5/2

Not perfect, but good enough to be passable, as they aren’t the focus.

Misc: .5/2

Good, but not very fulfilling at the end.

VERDICT: 6.5/10

Watchable for fans of the genre, but that’s about it.
