For April 1st- Poolboy: Drowning Out the Fury

There are two different types of spoof available when it comes to movies.  There are parodies that are acted straight, such as Black Dynamite.  They are written to make fun of themselves, but none of the actors or the characters in them are ever aware.  And then there are the flicks that are self-aware.  They are constantly making pushes through the fourth wall as they tell their jokes directly to the audience.  Poolboy is one of the latter.

Story/Writing: 1/2

A fun send-up of crazy 80’s action films.  Built on a ridiculous premise, the movie only continues to expand until it gets completely uncontrollable.

Acting: 1.5/2

Kevin Sorbo is hysterical as the lead hero.  I felt that he pushed the film along better than Poolboy‘s “director” who occasionally pops in for commentary on the movie.  Treio is in there mostly because he’s always in this kind of flick.

Photography/Set: 1/2

Very obvious movie sets, but it keeps in the vein that the film is trying to make fun of, so it works.  The shooting style could have stuck closer to the original subject matter.  It just seems too new for its own good.

Sound/FX: 1.5/2

Pretty funny stuff, that again stays true to the movies that are getting teased.  The sound dubbing jokes are pretty well-timed too.

Misc: 1.5/2

A really great spoof, but falls to the one drawback of self-aware parody, treating the audience like they’re really dumb.  I always felt like they were pointing to the punchlines over and over to make sure I got it.

A good starter spoof for the casual watcher, but connoisseurs of the genre should approach with caution.
