For March 28th- OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like if a French film production company were to remake Get Smart in the image of the OSS 117 and James Bond films, then your answer is most definitely this movie.  Usually, spoof movies can have trouble keeping the jokes fresh and non-repetitive.

Story/Writing: 2/2

A perfect spoof of 60’s spy films.  Full of international intrigue, shady underground movements, and even Nazis!  The writing is smooth, with just enough characters to be a spy movie,  but not too many as to confuse the audience.  Lots of great one-liners too.

Acting: 2/2

Really great comedy actors, on both sides of the jokes.  Everyone seems to realize that the main protagonist, OSS 117, isn’t the best spy, but it’s okay because he’s super-suave.

Photography/Set: 1.5/2

All of the sets and shots look exactly like a post-war spy flick, even the special effects match.  Sometimes I forgot that I was watching a film making fun of spy movies, and not a spy movie itself.

Sound/FX: 1/2

Pretty good effects that all fit with the air of the original subject.  It was hard to tell with the night chase scene as to whether they were attempting to make fun of the film effect they used or not.

Misc: 1.5/2

A great send-up of the spy movies of yesteryear.

VERDICT: 8/10

Absolutely do not miss it if you are into dry, parodic humor.  Also good if you are a fan of James Bond and/or other spy flicks.
